HOLLYWOOD star Ben Affleck may be about to join Leonardo DiCaprio Down Under, with the actor in talks to join the cast of Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby, Deadline reported Thursday.
Affleck is expected to play Tom Buchanan in the movie based on the literary classic of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Baz Luhrmann to film Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio in Sydney
BAZ Luhrmann has signed a deal to remake one of the most iconic movies of all time, The Great Gatsby, in Sydney.
In a coup for the Australian film industry and the NSW government of Kristina Keneally, Luhrmann has brushed New York - where the classic tale is set - and will instead shoot a 3D version in NSW.
The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the State Government signed off on a production deal with Luhrmann early on Friday morning.
Luhrmann has already secured Leonardo DiCaprio to play Jay Gatsby in the F. Scott Fitzgerald story, one of the film industry’s most anticipated projects.
It will be the first time Luhrmann and DiCaprio have worked together since the Oscar-nominated Romeo + Juliet in 1996.
DiCaprio, who commands $20 million a movie, will reprise the role made famous by Robert Redford in 1974, with 25-year-old British actress Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, played by Mia Farrow in the original.
Tobey Maguire is tipped to play young bachelor Nick Carraway, rounding out an all-star cast.
The production will provide a much-needed boost to the struggling local film industry.
It’s also a gamble for Luhrmann, whose last movie, Australia, was a box-office flop internationally and who needs another hit like Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge (2001) to his name.
The Warner Bros-backed film will be produced at Sydney’s Fox Studios and will be the first live-action 3D movie shot in NSW.
Filming will begin in August and last 17 weeks before 30 weeks of post-production.
Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin will re-create famous New York and Long Island landmarks from the 1920s.
The tale of doomed love has been filmed six times, the most famous being the 1974 Francis Ford Coppola-penned version starring Redford and Farrow.
Mulligan, who beat Gossip Girl star Blake Lively and Amanda Seyfried for the role, burst into tears when Luhrmann phoned her and said: “Hello, Daisy Buchanan.”
Before he signed a deal to bring the movie to Sydney, Luhrmann, who is in the US, had been tipped to choose New York or possibly Europe to shoot the film.
Premier Kristina Keneally said the deal would inject more than $120 million into the NSW economy.
Ms Keneally said it had come at a good time for the local film industry, which had suffered from the strong Australian dollar.
With the location set, Luhrmann will begin pre-production as early as next month.

Carey Mulligan Goes Gatsby Glam!
Now that Carey Mulligan has beat out some of Hollywood’s hottest babes for the part of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby—easily one of T-town’s most hyped films—Baz Luhrmann has released a shot from her screen test with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Do you think Mulligan has what it takes to toy with Leo’s heart (onscreen)?
No offense to sex pots Blake Lively or Scarlett Johansson, but this is the kinda beauty we imagined when faux reading through Gatsby (one of America’s greatest and most beloved novels) in middle school.
Carey’s totally gorgeous, but not in an in-your-face kinda way. We think her chic glam and charm will easily translate to the big screen.
Plus, this shot was just for audition purposes; we have a feeling her look will evolve more as the movie moves forward.
But are you satisfied?

Leonardo DiCaprio Nabs Killer Role In ‘Devil In The White City’
Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play a real-life serial killer in the film adaptation of the best-selling novel “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America.” The 35-year-old will also produce the film alongside his Appian Way partner Jennifer Killoran and Double Features duo Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher.
According to Deadline, the team has acquired the screen rights to Erik Larson’s 2003 nonfiction novel, which tells the story of the architect of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and the serial killer who terrorized the event. DiCaprio will star as Dr. HH Holmes, the slick serial killer who covers up as a doctor and lures his victims into the World’s Fair Hotel. The structure, which was known as the “murder castle,” included a gas chamber, crematorium and a dissecting table. The role of Daniel H. Burnham, who built the famous fair’s landscape, has not been confirmed.
While Paramount was once affiliated with an adaptation, the film currently has no studio home or financing.
In a statement, DiCaprio’s partner, Killoran, described the novel as “truly a one-of-its-kind American story about our nation’s first serial killer,” adding, “We’re exited to bring it to the big screen.” Shamberg and Sher noted the story’s mass appeal, saying, “This is a big, entertaining thriller in an incredible setting that will appeal to a worldwide audience.”
Killoran credited the Golden Globe-winning actor’s decision to play the evil Holmes to the killer’s complex persona, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I think that a guy who is that intelligent and that charismatic is nothing less than complex, and it’s that complexity that [DiCaprio] is drawn to,” she said. “And because people don’t know much about [Holmes], it makes it even more interesting.”
DiCaprio isn’t the first Hollywood heavyweight to take up Larson’s novel. Back in 2003, Tom Cruise expressed interest in playing the notorious killer.

Leo & Blake: Jay & Daisy???
So…
A reader just wrote to tell me that Leonardo DiCaprio and Blake Lively had dinner last night with some people at The Lion in NYC. She said that they ended up leaving together. I can’t… process this right now. Let’s just assume they were sharing a cab. Although the prospect of the two of them hooking up? It’s GREAT for gossip. And aesthetically, she is totally his type.
There is of course the professional angle to consider.
As you know, Leo has read for Baz Luhrmann’s potential adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Apparently, should he choose to go ahead, Leo and Tobey are his choices for Jay and Nick. It’s Daisy who’s been the big question mark. We had quite a discussion about it yesterday on the liveblog. Sarah also declared that F Scott Fitzgerald is overrated. I wanted to throttle her for this. Tender is the Night!
Anyway, Who Is Daisy became the great debate.
And now that Blake joined Leo, who met with Luhrmann the other day to discuss the project, could she have possibly won the role? I need to lie down.
Thanks C!
