Air America beta radio has mentioned last friday an unauthorized documentary about Leonardo DiCaprio’s life. You’re probably wondering, “What is this, the 90s?” In a way, yes. All of the footage featured in “Hangin’ With Leo” looks like it’s from the late 1990s, when DiCaprio was riding the wave of “Titanic” ending up on “The Beach.” If you would like [...]
Leo’s Entourage
With Leonardo DiCaprio in Alberta filming a movie, here’s a guide for keeping his ever-present crew busy

MARTIN SCORSESE
- You know him as: The director who was robbed of an Oscar for Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), Cape Fear (1991) and Casino (1995) before finally winning one for The Departed (2006), thanks partly to DiCaprio.
- Membership: Seven years.
- Role: Filmmaking master and DiCaprio’s biggest fan. After working with DiCaprio on Gangs of New York (2002), Scorsese has enlisted him in at least three more movies, including the title role in The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, due out 2011.
- Most likely to: Overshadow DiCaprio’s eventual Oscar win with a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award.
- Party plans: Lock everyone in a movie theatre overnight to watch Oscar winning films from 1973, 1976, 1980, 1990, 1991 and 1995. Then off to Mercato for a family-style Italian feast.
If being famous means being popular, then celebrities should have more friends than they can count.
But judging from the tireless parade of poor judgment and Hollywood scandal, fame can be lonely. A celebrity needs a trusted confidant to protect them from drunken mug shots, rehab stints and career-defining crotch shots.
Leonardo DiCaprio is one such celebrity who loves to have a good time, but appears
ELLEN PAGE
- You know her as: Juno (she’s also Canada’s cutest Hollywood transplant).
- Membership: Newcomer.
- Role: The Underestimated Girl. At 5-foot-1 she may be small, but the 22-year-old Halifax native has proved her mettle already.
- Most likely to: Win an Oscar before DiCaprio.
- Party Plans: Wait until DiCaprio gets drunk and passes out before taking advantage of . . . his hotel suite by ordering room service and Whip It on pay-per-view.
to maintain a certain levelheadedness thanks in large part to his posse of pals, many of whom grew up together in Los Angeles.
DiCaprio is in Calgary this week working on Christopher Nolan’s latest movie Inception, which began filming on Monday.
Although the single superstar will only be in the area for a couple of weeks he rarely gets away without working in a little fun. Here is a guide to Calgary and its surrounding foothills for Leo and his loyal friends.
LUKAS HAAS
- You know him as: The Amish boy who sees too much in Harrison Ford’s 1985 Oscar winner Witness. He was also on the arm of Natalie Portman a few years back. Still can’t place him? Well, he’s been in more movies and TV shows than nearly every member of this entourage combined.
- Membership: An original.
- Role: The Poet. The multi-talented singer-songwriter seduces the ladies with one of about 10 instruments he plays.
- Most likely: To be overlooked for the supporting role that props up DiCaprio’s best actor win.
- Party plans: Torn between the meat-eaters Palomino Smokehouse and The Ship & Anchor for live music, the sometime vegetarian may have to flip a coin before hitting Beat Niq late night.
KEVIN CONNOLLY
- You know him as: Eric (E) Murphy on HBO’s Entourage. But before that he was Kev-o in DiCaprio’s entourage. Ah, the irony.
- Membership: An original.
- Role: The Wingman. He’s a serial dater of celebrity sisters -Hailey Duff, Nikki Hilton- but when he’s not working he’s ready to party any night of the week.
- Most likely: To produce the movie for which DiCaprio wins
his first Oscar.
- Party plans: In lieu of courtside L.A. Lakers seats, Connolly could treat the group to a Calgary Flames game. Then the HBO hottie can lead the boys straight to Cowboys for hooters shooters. (But watch out for the waitresses, gentlemen. Learn from Prince Harry.)
ETHAN SUPLEE
- You know him as: Randy Hickey on My Name is Earl or the scary racist bully in American History X.
- Membership: An original.
- Role: The voice of reason. Married with two kids, this is the guy who gets a consistent paycheque from the well-paid world of serial TV.
- Most likely to: Write the script that earns DiCaprio an Oscar.
- Party plans: After loosing more than 100 pounds a few years back, Suplee is the picture of health. Since the ski slopes are open he can get the boys outfitted with boards, beer on the hill and wrap up the day with an organic feast at Canmore’s Crazy Weed.
DAVID SUZUKI
- You know him as: Leading environmentalist and star of DiCaprio’s The 11th Hour.
- Membership: Newcomer.
- Role: The crusader. Never one to let the party get out of control, Suzuki can keep Leo’s focus on the oilsands.
- Most likely to: Beat out hundreds of eligible Calgary bachelorettes for the attentions of green-heated DiCaprio.
- Party plans: Hit McDonald’s in a gas-guzzling Hummer for a methane-fuelled double cheeseburger before meeting Calgary’s most prominent oil and gas execs for a game of beer pong. Or not.
TOBEY MAGUIRE
- You know him as: Your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.
- Membership: An original.
- Role: The Heart. This is the guy you can turn to when you miss the supermodel with whom you just broken up. He’s the macho equivalent of the girlfriend who holds your hair back while you puke.
- Most likely to: Pass on the role that wins DiCaprio the Oscar.
- Party plans: After a quick stop at the comic bookstore in Kensington to see his face in the geek section, the married father of two will take the boys to cheer on the Stampeders on Sunday horse races before hitting The Coup, one Calgary’s few vegetarian restaurants.
