China New Energy Vehicle Maker BYD Signs Leonardo DiCaprio As Brand Ambassador
China automaker BYD has signed up international celebrity Leonardo DiCaprio as brand ambassador for its new energy vehicles.
As brand endorsements go, it’s not a bad mix: BYD supplied 11% of the world’s new energy vehicles in 2015. DiCaprio’s foundation, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, has given $61 million over the years for projects that build climate resiliency.
“All over the world, people are realizing that cars that run on fossil fuels are inefficient and a major threat to the planet,” said DiCaprio said in a statement. “I am very pleased to be joining an effort to increase the number of clean vehicles on the road in China and beyond.” DiCaprio said.
The agreement runs through 2017.
BYD, which sells electric buses as well as cars, saw a 130% increase in new energy vehicle sales in the first half of 2016, allowing the company to strengthen its hold on the Chinese plug-in vehicle market with a 65% share.
BYD’s chairman Wang Chuanfu has a fortune worth $4.3 billion on the real-time Forbes Billionaires List. The company is about 8% owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.

Martin Scorsese to team up with Leo for the next film
Martin Scorsese will resume his creative partnership with Leonardo DiCaprio with his next film, The Devil in the White City.
The veteran director, who will release the Liam Neeson-starring Silence this week, has revealed which project he’ll be working on next, with biopics of Frank Sinatra and professional daredevil Evel Knievel also in the works.
Speaking to The Toronto Sun, Scorsese said that in January his focus will return to the adaptation of Erik Larson’s 2003 best-selling novel The Devil in the White City. “One of the things that I had to stop for the past six months was my meetings on that script,” he said. “They want me to start again in January and see if we can find a way because it’s an extraordinary story.”
DiCaprio is set to play the role of the novel’s serial killer, Dr. H. H. Holmes. Should everything go to plan, it will be the seventh time that Scorsese and DiCaprio have worked together as director and actor respectively. The partnership began with 2002’s Gangs of New York, and includes The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Meanwhile, Scorsese will digitally re-age another of his favourite actors to work with, Robert De Niro, in a new film. Read more about the upcoming gangster movie The Irishman here.

upcoming movies!!!
The Irishman, which will star both Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The plot is said to center around mobster Frank Sheeran, with shooting finally scheduled to start next month after being in the works in one way or another for almost 25 years. Scorsese is reportedly sticking with the same cast he had planned when he first started writing the screenplay, and plans to “de-age” the actors with the same technology used by studios to create superhero movies.
Meanwhile, in Scorsese’s other project, Leonardo DiCaprio is expected to return to star in an adaptation of the hit historical novel The Devil In The White City. The story combines the story of the Chicago Worlds Fair (which inspired Walt Disney to create Disneyland) and the serial killer HH Holmes. DiCaprio will play Holmes, which seems like another spot of genius casting.
Unfortunately, neither film has received an official release date. Which one are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below. Oh, and if you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the trailer for Silence.
Leonardo DiCaprio says climate action is America’s “biggest economic opportunity”
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio is taking President-elect Donald Trump to task on the topic of climate change. At this month’s United Nations Correspondents Association awards ceremony, DiCaprio called out a “few, very prominent people” who still deny the science on climate change – and then suggested that climate action offers America’s “biggest economic opportunity.”
Hopes soared when DiCaprio met with the President-elect’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, earlier this month. The actor even met with the President-elect to clue him in on the fact that renewable energy could generate millions of jobs. But with top government positions offered to people like ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson and Energy Transfer Partners board member Rick Perry, it seems Trump refuses to acknowledge the science on climate change.
As DiCaprio received a prize at the U.N. event, he said the truth about climate change is spreading like wildfire. He said the world’s scientists have come to “overwhelming conclusions” that climate change is “largely human-caused and needs immediate urgent attention.” The actor and activist also said that “In less than 100 years of our pollution-based prosperity, we humans have put our entire existence in jeopardy.”
DiCaprio’s recently released film Before the Flood is one of the most-viewed documentaries in history – and according to the actor, the impressive statistics show “just how much the world cares about the issue of climate change.” National Geographic Channel issued a press release back in early November stating the film was the “most-watched documentary in the world since 2000, and the most watched National Geographic film ever released.
DiCaprio also had a message of hope for those who fear backward environmental policies from Trump. “To those who may be discouraged by nay-sayers, let me remind you, the environmental awakening is all over the world and the progress we have made so far…has always been because of people, not governments.” The actor listed purchasing cleaner vehicles, eating smaller amounts of meat, and businesses going carbon-neutral as steps people have taken to battle climate change without the help of any government.
