PTA, Cuaron, Streisand, Del Toro, Edgar Wright, Inarritu, DiCaprio, Chazelle, Nolan Among Directors Appealing To Warner Bros To Save FilmStruck

Date: November 12, 2018 at 8:44:29 PM PST
To: Toby Emmerich

Subject: FilmStruck

Dear Toby,

We know that Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese have been in touch with you and Warners Media Group about the demise of FilmStruck and have urged you guys to keep it going.

While it was not your decision, we would like to loudly echo their sentiments. The FilmStruck service was (IS) the best streaming service for fans of cinema of all kinds: classic studio movies, independent cinema, international treasures. Without it, the landscape for film fans and students of cinema is especially bleak. There’s a reason there was a huge outpouring from artists and fans over it being shuttered, they were doing the Movie God’s work.
We know one of the reasons that it has been shut down is because of an upcoming Warners streaming service, but really FilmStruck shouldn’t be a conflict of interest. In this day and age where there are dozens of platforms, curation of content is really important and FilmStruck was providing a service to both satisfy older fans of cinema and a younger generation of cineastes that will be making amazing movies long after we’re dead.

In an era of huge corporate acquisitions of cinema by communication companies- in a business that may render billions of dollars off a medium like cinema, we believe this is a gesture that is needed- a minuscule show of goodwill towards the preservation and accesibility of a tradition and a rich history that would benefit the public.

So we want to add our names to the petition started by Marty and Steven and want you (and Warners) to know that we feel equally strongly and would do anything to support the service being saved.

Yours,

Paul Thomas Anderson

James Brolin
Damien Chazelle
Alfonso Cuarón

LEONARDO DICAPRIO LAUNCHES VEGAN CLOTHING LINE TO SAVE PRIMATES

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently partnered with primatologist Jane Goodall to launch a limited-edition vegan apparel line to support ape conservation. Called “Don’t Let Them Disappear,” the clothing line is a collaboration between environmental nonprofit the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation and the Jane Goodall Institute which works to protect ape species around the globe. The line is available for purchase until November 16 and offers organic t-shirts, a hoodie, and an eco-fleece crewneck sweatshirt—all featuring a unique design inscribed with the words “Don’t Let Them Disappear.” The merchandise honors five species of apes (gibbons, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans) whose natural habitats have been lost due to human industries such as agriculture, logging, palm oil, gas drilling, and construction, as well as climate change. “It is estimated that orangutans have lost over 80 percent of their habitat in the last 20 years, largely due to fragmentation from the palm oil and wood pulp industries,” DiCaprio posted on Facebook. “The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation and the Jane Goodall Institute have teamed up to develop a line of apparel to support teams on the ground working to save this incredible species.” DiCaprio, who is an outspoken environmental advocate, has previously invested in vegan brands such as Beyond Meat and HIPPEAS.

Let’s Revisit Leonardo DiCaprio’s Best Role: ‘Growing Pains’

In 1992, Leonardo DiCaprio, future star of The Man in the Iron Mask, burst onto the scene as the newest cast member of the hit sitcom Growing Pains, which is now streaming on Prime Video. Premiering in 1985 and starring Kirk Cameron, Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns, and oodles of familial love, the series is exactly what you’d expect from an ’80s sitcom that centers on the madcap antics of former teen scamp Kirk Cameron. Growing Pains is a good show that just so happens to have a true banger of a theme song. Decider’s resident youth correspondent Claire Spellberg confirmed that the song “straight slaps” and is “catchy af.” Both of those things, I’m told, are positive.

During the final season of the series, the Seaver family pulled a pre-Sandy Cohen by adopting a bright homeless kid, Luke, portrayed with an abundance of youthful moxie by Tobey Maguire’s lifelong friend Leonardo “She likes me for me” DiCaprio. Growing Pains launched DiCaprio’s career as the actor went on to appear in a number of beloved films, including Titanic, The Departed, Romeo Addition Sign Juliet, Inception, and Catch Me If You Can.

He also starred in the aforementioned movie The Man in the Iron Mask, which is a film about a man in an iron mask.

Do I truly believe that Leo’s work on Growing Pains is his “best role”? No. That’s just me joshing with you. But you know what? Growing Pains is probably DiCap’s best comedic performance. Think about it. The Great Gatsby? I don’t think so, old sport. The Wolf of Wallstreet? An entertaining movie, but a comedy? Woof. The Man in the Iron Mask? No idea. I’ve never seen it, but the mere fact that this movie exists fascinates me for some unknown reason. If you’ve never had the pleasure of watching Leo “Sunny” D in Growing Pains, you should head to Amazon. He’s not only legitimately good, regularly holding his own while matching theatrical wits with Kirk “my sister was on Full House” Cameron, but he was also forced to deliver some of the most bizarre lines in sitcom history.

Let’s revisit the two best aspects of this good-but-not-great sitcom: The theme song (obviously) and a young Leonardo “you better believe I’m going to sit backwards on this chair” DiCaprio being forced to say a bunch of super strange shit.

Brad Pitt gives us a wave as he takes Leonardo DiCaprio for a spin on set

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio continue the 70s vibes as they got about the set of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood this week.

As filming showed no signs of letting up, months after Brad and Leo were first seen in their disco duds way back in June, the pair were spotted driving in an old school car. Again. Brad, 54, was one chipper chap as he flashed a smile and a wave as he held a hand out the window. Not entirely road safe, but it’s Brad Pitt, so you know, we’re sure he has the talent to wave, drive and keep his eyes firmly fixed on the road ahead. Well someone loves their job… (Picture: Splash News) The car looked to also be on a trolley, so that’s neither here nor there… Leo took a seat in the passenger side as his buddy got to grips on the wheel with both continuing to sport the hair styles of the time that have raised many an eyebrow, immersing themselves in the vibe of the time, which is set during the Manson murders in tinseltown. He was sporting a funky little number (Picture: Splash News) On this day in particular, Brad was rocking some holiday threads, wearing what appeared to be a Hawaiian shirt. While Leo appeared to be in a mustard top, as they colour coordinated with the egg-shell car. (Don’t say we don’t know our colours…) Leo, 43, plays Western actor Rick Dalton, who lives next door to Sharon Tate (who was two weeks from giving birth to her child with director Roman Polanski, when she was murdered by members of Manson’s cult) while Brad plays his close friend and stunt double. Set around the summer of 1969 when Sharon was murdered along with Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Parent, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. The movie is filled to the brim with stars, as Margot Robbie stars as Sharon Tate, while the cast also includes Kurt Russell, Al Pacino, Dakota Fanning, Damian Lewis, Emile Hirsch, Rumer Willis and Lena Dunham.

Leonardo DiCaprio Pays Tribute to Paul Allen, Environmentalist: ‘His Legacy Lives’

Oscar winner and staunch environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio paid tribute on Monday to Paul Allen, Microsoft’s co-founder whose death was announced on Monday.

“Sad to hear of the passing of Paul Allen, who was a strong advocate for environmental protection,” wrote the actor on Twitter. “He and the team at Vulcan played a pivotal role in developing the Shark Conservation Fund alongside LDF. His legacy lives on via his incredible work as a philanthropist and investor,” added DiCaprio.

Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates and went on to become owner of the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blazers, died from complications related to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 65.
His death was announced on the website of his current company, Vulcan Inc., which DiCaprio referenced in his Twitter tribute to the late tech icon.

DiCaprio has been a longtime advocate for the environment.

He produced and appeared in the 2016 climate change documentary, “Before the Flood.” DiCaprio also met with President Donald Trump’s team in late 2016 to present a “framework” on how focusing on renewable, clean energy could create millions of jobs. He teamed up last year with Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto in an effort to save the endangered vaquita porpoise, native to the Gulf of California.

“The Revenant” star also met with Pope Francis at the Vatican in 2016 to discuss the environment, which both men have displayed an interest in protecting.

LEONARDO DICAPRIO’S FOUNDATION LENDS PLATFORM, MEGAPHONE TO UVA CLIMATE EXPERT

Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation tapped University of Virginia climate change expert Deborah Lawrence to write about the crucial importance of forests, just ahead of the United Nations’ landmark report on the dire situation the Earth is facing due to rising temperatures.

The world’s top scientific body studying climate change said Monday that nations will need to take “unprecedented” steps to stem rising temperatures that, if unchecked, would create dangerous rising seas, food shortages, wildfires and the mass destruction of coral reefs by 2040 – years earlier than had previously been forecast.

The mission of the DiCaprio Foundation, founded in 1998, is to ensure the well-being of all Earth’s inhabitants. Lawrence, a professor of environmental sciences, connected with the foundation in November 2017 at the U.N.’s Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany. She’d just spoken about the importance of forests in keeping the Earth cool when she caught the attention of Karl Burkart, the foundation’s director of innovation, media and technology.
“We talked, and I really pushed to enhance the profile of forests on the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation,” she said.

Fast forward to Oct. 4, when Lawrence and 39 other leading scientists published “Five Reasons the Earth’s Climate Depends on Forests” on the website of Climate and Land Use Alliance. Once again, Burkart’s interest was piqued and he reached out to Lawrence to pen a piece for the DiCaprio Foundation.

Her article, “Deforestation is Tearing Through Our Carbon Budget,” appeared Sunday evening on the foundation’s news homepage, just ahead of the media coverage avalanche in response to the U.N.’s alarming report.

Talking with UVA Today, Lawrence likened forests to giant air conditioners.

“Forests, especially tropical forests, cool the atmosphere because they move a lot of water,” she said. “This process cools the air over the tropical rainforest, over the entire tropics, and it actually contributes to cooling the planet. So it’s like a giant air conditioner.”

What happens if the world cannot do what it takes to slow global warming? “We are heading toward a three-degree Celsius warming [above preindustrial levels]. I can’t even tell you how incredibly dangerous that would be.”

In the grand scheme of things, an increase of that size may not sound alarming, but Lawrence, who is focusing new research on how to convey the seriousness of global warming, said it should. “When I tell you that Charlottesville, which now has 30 days above 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, will have 90 or 95 days over 90 degrees in the summer, that is really different,” she said.

Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio Bring Back ’60s Fashion While Making Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Brad Pit and Leonardo DiCaprio definitely look the part in Quentin Tarantino’s new ’60s-set movie.

The actors are starring in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, Tarantino’s highly-anticipated ninth film that centers on the two as they navigate Hollywood in the groovy era. Pitt and DiCaprio have been spotted shooting with Tarantino all over Los Angeles since mid-summer and have recently been joined by costars.

They were most recently seen shooting with Margaret Qualley and Margot Robbie, who plays Sharon Tate. They’ve also been spotted with Lena Dunham; the cast also includes Dakota Fanning and Emile Hirsch.

This time around, the two were solo and showed off their late ’60s looks. Pitt was in an all-white denim get up with a black shirt underneath, while DiCaprio went for pastels with salmon-colored pants and a similarly toned striped shirt.
