Chapter 29
It was Rose’s day off, if doctors ever have a day off, most of the times when they think they finally can rest then some extreme and rare case appears and they have to return to work. Anyway, it was Rose’s day off and she was still sleeping; Mia woke up first and decided to make their breakfast. She went to the kitchen, made some pancakes and prepared a fresh orange juice. Rose woke up with the noise and went to the kitchen to see what was going on there.
“Good morning mom…” Mia said
“Good morning…” Rose said opening her mouth
“Are you hungry? I made us some pancakes…” Mia said
“No honey…actually…I’m not feeling hungry…” Rose said starting to get pale
“Mom are you alright?” Mia asked
But Rose started running to the bathroom with her hands covering her mouth. Mia, worried, run after her; she found Rose throwing up in the bathroom.
“Mom…are you okay?”
“Yes Mia I’m fine…” Rose said
“No you’re not…”
“I am…” Rose said washing her face
“Sure?”
“Yes sure…I probably ate something I shouldn’t…and my stomach is warning me of that…now come back to the kitchen and eat your breakfast…”
“Aren’t you gonna eat with me?”
“No Mia as I said I am not hungry…”
The phone started ringing.
“Can you answer it please?” Rose asked her
Mia went over the phone and Rose looked at herself on the mirror. She was really looking pale. Mia returned with the phone.
“Mom it’s Linda…she’s asking if you wanna go to the café with her…”
“Yes…tell her I can go…is she coming or does she wants me to go?”
“Mmmm…she says for you to meet her at “Johnny’s”
“Ah okay…tell her to give me half an hour and I’ll be there…”
Mia returned to the living room with the phone and Rose went to her room to change. She looked at herself on the mirror, touching to her belly.
“No Rose…don’t be stupid…you can’t be…” she thought to herself
One thing was true: she was having morning sicknesses and her period was late. But nothing of that could confirm a pregnancy. The symptoms were the same but it didn’t mean a thing; only a pregnancy test could confirm if she was really pregnant or not.
Later she met Linda at “Johnny’s Bar”. Her friend was already there waiting for her.
“So Rosie…what’s up my friend?” Linda asked
“Nothing worthy to say…what about you?” Rose answered
“Well Rose you know my life sucks…I don’t have nothing new to tell you…and you? I knew you met Jack again…”
“Who told you that?” Rose asked surprised
“Mia…”
“That girl…okay yes I’ve seen him…that’s it…”
“How is he?”
“He’s good...”
“How good? You mean good good or good hot?”
Rose rolled her eyes.
“What? I’m sorry but I am not blind…”
“Yes…he’s still the same…but now it’s different…I only saw him professionally…”
“Professionally? What do you mean? Is he sick?”
“No he’s not sick…but his daughter had an accident and his wife too…they we’re my patients…”
“That’s what I call luck…so he’s still married…”
“Yes he is…”
“That’s not good…how can he stand that witch for so long?”
“I don’t know…” Rose said with the vomits coming to her mouth again
“What is it?” Linda asked
“Nothing…I just felt sick…” Rose said
“Did you eat something or what?”
“Yes I think it’s a cake I ate yesterday…” Rose said
“I only know two reasons for that: or you ate something you shouldn’t or you’re…wait…Rose…”
“Oh no….it’s not what you’re thinking…” Rose said scared that Linda would figured the truth
“Rose you can’t be…can you?”
“No…I’m not pregnant if it’s what you’re thinking…”
“You’re not? I mean…Cal died a long time ago…wait…Jack…”
“Linda stop! You’re watching too many movies…”
“Okay…so I’m gonna ask it in a different way? Are you sure you’re not pregnant or you may be?”
“I don’t know…but I think I’m not…”
“What have you been doing little miss Rose…”
“Nothing…”
“You don’t fool me…I can see it all…”
“Okay you won! I may be pregnant yes…but please Linda…nobody can know about this…”
“How is that possible? If you’re really pregnant you’re belly will be bigger and…”
“At least for now…while I’m not sure…”
“And the father is…”
“Who else?”
“Oh my gosh you and Jack…Rose!!!”
“What?”
“I don’t believe…you and Jack…”
“Yes….now can you speak lower please…”
“Damn that’s something I could never imagine…”
“Me neither…I mean…how could this happen to me? I made a big mistake…”
“Wait you’re not sure if you’re pregnant or not…”
“Yeah but it’s very possible…I have a daughter remember? I know how these things work…”
“And if you’re really pregnant what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know…I have no idea…”
“Are you going to tell him?”
“No…of course not…”
“Why not? He’s the father…”
“And he’s married too…I just can’t do this to him…I won’t use this child to make him comeback to me…”
“How are you going to hide this from him?”
“Why are we talking like if we were sure that I am pregnant?”
“Because I am almost sure that is the reality…”
“It was just one time…why did I had to….”
“Honey one time is enough…”
“You tell me about it…”
“Why don’t you just make the test and see if you’re really pregnant or not?”
“I am scared…of what that test might say…”
“Anyway…if you’re really pregnant…you’ll have to tell him…”
“I know, I know…but…he’s still married…what do you think people will say about it?”
“Forget about people…don’t worry…first you have to make that test…and then…if you’re really pregnant…we will find a way…”
