Oscar-nominated movie star Leonardo DiCaprio will be returning to Alberta to shoot his next film, a revenge Western called The Revenant, the Calgary Herald has learned.
Sources say the film will be shot in both B.C. and Alberta, likely in the fall. No firm dates or locations have been confirmed, but sources say production officials have already opened an office in Vancouver and are looking for space in Calgary.
“It’s anticipated a shooting schedule in the October to March range,” said the source about the Alberta shoot. “Eighty days of shooting.”
According to movie-industry news sources, it will be directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, best known for dramas such as 21 Grams, Babel and Biutiful. Actors Tom Hardy and Will Poulter, best known for his role in the comedy We’re the Millers, will co-star.
DiCaprio and Hardy were in Alberta in 2010 to shoot Christopher Nolan’s big-budget spectacle Inception.
Based on a novel by Michael Punke, the film “centers on the 1820s’ story of a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, who set out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling,” according to Internet Movie Database.
Los Angeles Times reports that Emmanuel Lubezki, the Oscar-winning cinematographer who shot Gravity, has also signed on for the project.
