Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood’ Takes Over The Sunset Strip

Coming soon to a theater near you, an iconic glimpse at late 1960s Hollywood has taken form in Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. There’s a lot of hype around this movie, and for good reason. It might be one of the last movies we get to see from Tarantino before he retires from film and it’s the very first time we’ve seen DiCaprio and Pitt together on the big screen.

The film is like a time machine taking us back to Hollywood circa 1969. Production crews transformed Hollywood Boulevard, recreating scenes and locations from the late ’60s. You can hear how this was done on KPCC’s The Frame, where the location scout and production designer for the film explained some of the behind-the-scenes work for listeners. Those who lived through that era will enjoy the nod to “old Hollywood” via the film’s use of vintage signage, era-specific cars, curated wardrobes, throwback posters and billboards, and even RTD buses. And those who were born outside of this era will be able to experience Hollywood in a new way.

This month, if you cruise down the Sunset Strip, you will get a taste of what’s to come. You will see a concentration of art on billboards and walls featuring the ensemble cast of the film. As you drive past the Whisky a Go Go or the Andaz Hotel, you’ll find these billboards and see the familiar faces of not only DiCaprio and Pitt, but also Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, and the late Luke Perry. These actors embody what is was to be in Hollywood in 1969.

The billboards will be up for most of July, holding us tight for the release of the film on July 26th. “Once Upon a Time In… Hollywood” is a movie that will hold a special place for those who love the history of film, Tarantino, and Tinseltown. Leo and Brad Pitt Were Starstruck by Luke Perry

It’s universally acknowledged that Luke Perry, who died earlier this year following a stroke, was one of the kindest, most generous souls inhabiting the brutal hellscape known as Hollywood, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt want to make sure you don’t forget it. Because, what do you know, these boys are the stealth co-presidents of the Luke Perry Fan Club!

Speaking with Esquire about working together in Quentin Tarantino’s newest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywoodthe duo’s conversation briefly turned to Perry’s involvement, who appeared in a supporting capacity as a fictitious actor. As it turns out, Perry was an early childhood idol for both of them. “I remember my friend Vinny, who is in the film as well,” DiCaprio recalled, “we walked in and we both had this butterfly moment of like, ‘Oh my God, that’s Luke Perry over there!’”

“That’s Luke fucking Perry! We were like kids in the candy shop because I remember going to the studios and Beverly Hills, 90210 was going on and he was that icon of coolness for us as teenagers,” Pitt added. “It was this strange burst of excitement that I had, to be able to act with him. Man, he was so incredibly humble and amazing and absolutely committed. He couldn’t have been a more friendly, wonderful guy to spend time with. I got to sit down and have some wonderful conversations with him. It was really special.”
