First pic from Django Unchained

In two new images from Quentin Tarantino’s latest, which also stars Kerry Washington, Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson, the actors showcase costumes authentic to the film’s Southern locale.

Quentin Tarantino fans eager to see the filmmaker’s take on spaghetti westerns got their first look Thursday at what he calls his “Southern.” The Weinstein Company released two images from Django Unchained, one featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and the other Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, both of which highlight the period details in Tarantino’s depiction of the antebellum American South.

Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave who strikes a tenuous deal with bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (played by Waltz) in exchange for help finding his kidnapped wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington). DiCaprio plays a plantation owner named Calvin Candie, who grooms slaves to battle each other for sport. Kurt Russell plays Candie’s slave trainer, and Samuel L. Jackson plays a house slave named Stephen who becomes suspicious of Django and Schultz after they begin to investigate Candie’s “Candyland” plantation complex.

Quentin Tarantino Reveals ‘Django Unchained’ Synopsis

Sony Pictures and the Weinstein Company released a synopsis Friday for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The follow-up to Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, the film tells the story of a slave in the antebellum South who agrees to help a bounty hunter track down a violent pair of fugitives in exchange for help in finding his long-lost wife.

According to the press release, the plot is as follows:

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.
Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Leonardo DiCaprio Heads West With Tarantino

Leonardo DiCaprio may be Martin Scorsese’s pet leading man, but the actor is eyeing a collaboration with another high profile director: DiCaprio is in talks to star in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The actor would play the villain in the spaghetti Western, a ranch and club owner named Calvin Candie who keeps women as slaves and makes men fight to the death. Django, the titular freed slave must deal with Candie in order to rescue his wife and get her to safety.

There’s no doubt that Tarantino will line up an amazing cast (Christoph Waltz and Will Smith are both rumored to get on board), and this sounds like a villainous role DiCaprio can really sink his teeth into. Can you see Leo going evil or is that baby face only suited to playing good guys?
