Leonardo DiCaprio to Promote ‘The Revenant’ in China

Leonardo DiCaprio to Promote ‘The Revenant’ in China

Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie The Revenant has made its debut on Friday in China.

On Sunday he will be here in China to promote the film.

Directed by veteran Alejandro Inarritu, the film follows a frontiersman’s journey of survival and revenge after being abandoned by his fellow fur trappers in the early 19th century in Native American territory.

Its triumphs at the Oscars in the best actor, director and cinematography categories have apparently helped the movie gain more popularity in China.

The Revenant debuted on more than 11,000 screens nationwide. The box office receipts of this movie have reached 4.45 million yuan or some 680,000 US dollars in one day.

According to the industry forecast, the total box office will be over 300 million yuan or 46 million US dollars.

Egyptian reporter’s DiCaprio gaffe sparks online ridicule

An Egyptian reporter fell foul of social media mockery after stumbling through a question she asked Leonardo DiCaprio about how he felt on winning his first Oscar at the awards show on Sunday night.

Despite her best efforts to get her ill-prepared question across, the Egyptian journalist’s strong accent and limited handling of the English language simply exposed her to ridicule.

It is hard to know what really happened in that room, but many are suggesting that her nerves might have got the better of her, or maybe she was just ill-prepared.

The reporter, who works for the privately-owned Youm 7 online newspaper, attempted to ask the U.S. actor how he felt about winning the “Best Actor” award for the first time after much anticipation.

“What about the first Oscar for you?” she asked DiCaprio, to which he replied, “what about it?”

She then said in elaboration: “…the first Oscar for you…”

“It feels amazing!” he answered with a quirky smile.

Leonardo DiCaprio says China can be ‘climate change hero’

Leonardo DiCaprio praised China’s work to combat climate change on a trip to Beijing on Sunday, and said he believes the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases could be “the hero of the environmental movement.”

The actor and environmentalist, who called for action to combat climate change during his Oscar acceptance speech last month, praised China’s shift toward renewable forms of energy to lower carbon emissions.

“As we all know, the United States and China are the two biggest contributors, and I think that China has made radical movements forward as far as alternative energy and ways to be sustainable,” he said at a news conference.

“I really think that China can be the hero of the environmental movement, they can be the hero of the climate change movement,” he said. “They have an opportunity to change the world and I have all the confidence in the world that that is their intention.”

DiCaprio was in Beijing to promote “The Revenant,” which won him his first Oscar, for best actor, at this year’s ceremony. The movie was released in mainland China on Friday and has already earned 100 million yuan ($15 million) at the Chinese box office, according to an announcement at Sunday’s news conference.

DiCaprio, who has made several trips to China in the past, is one of China’s most popular Hollywood actors, mainly because of his performance in “Titanic,” one of his few films that have been shown in mainland Chinese cinemas. He is affectionately called Xiao Li, or Little Lee, by Chinese.

China is the world’s largest coal user and producer, but has also become a leading investor in renewable forms of energy, such as solar and wind power.
