Chapter 6

Later that day the party had begun at the hotel. Jack was already there with his family. He had lost his hope about Rose appearing there. He was on a table with his sister who was waiting for Andy. Amy was wearing a long light pink dress, her hair was down with some curls and with a small pink diamond butterfly comb in one side of her hair. Jack was wearing a black tuxedo and his hair pulled back with gel.

“Do you think he’ll come?” Amy asked him

“Do you think she’ll come?” Jack asked her

They both started laughing of each other.

“Look at us…what the hell are we doing here?” Amy asked drinking a bit of champagne

“It’s our duty to be here…as future owners of the “JD Company”…” Jack said laughing

“So…can I join you in this table?” a male voice asked

Amy turned around and it was Andy.

“Andy! You came…” Amy said melting to him

“Hey Jack…Amy you look beautiful…” Andy said

“Thank you…” Amy said blushing

Great part of the people started walking near the stage that was in the centre of the room. Jack’s father walked to the stage followed by his wife and another man. He went to the microphone.

“Hello everybody! First of all I want to thank you all for being here sharing this special night with me and my family…my lovely wife and my fantastic children…” Jack’s father, Arthur, said

Jack and Amy joined them on the stage.

“My son Jack who will take care of all this empire when I’ll be no longer here between you all…and my beautiful daughter Amy…” Arthur continued “Well…I just want you all to have fun and for now let’s hear the astonishing voice of Miss Leann Stuart with an old classic “At Last”…”

A young and beautiful girl joined them on the stage. She was the leading singer of the hotel, and used to sing over there every night, and sometimes she was hired to sing in other important parties, like this one. A man sat down on the piano and she grabbed the microphone. Jack and his family went back to a table near the stage. The girl started singing an old classic by Etta James “At Last”.

At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
At last the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I’ve found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I never know
You smile, you smile and the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For you are mine
At last

When she started singing Jack noticed some people looking somewhere but he didn’t knew what it was. Curious, he raised up and looked at the same place everybody was looking to see what was happening. He saw a girl coming in. She was beautifully dressed, walking so elegant in her high shoes, carrying a small purse. She was blushing because everybody was looking at her. Then she looked in front and saw Jack. He was staring at her amazed with the transformation. She walked to him. He took her hand and kissed it.

“Good evening Mr Dawson…” she said with a shy smile

“Good evening Miss Rose…” he said smiling at her too “I’ve lost my hopes you seeing you here…”

“Well…here I am…” she said blushing

“You are so beautiful…” he said

Alicia was over there watching them.

“Who is she?” she asked her friend

“I don’t know…she’s beautiful…you better hurry or you’ll be loosing Jack for her…” her friend said

“Never!” Alicia said with a cold look

Back to Jack and Rose who were talking in a corner of the room.

“So…you invited me to stay here?” Rose asked him

“No…of course not…let me introduce you to my family and friends…” he said taking her by the hand

Jack proudly hold her hand and walked to the table where his family was. Rose shyly laid her head down to hide her embarrassment. In the table there was Jack’s father, Arthur, his mother, Nicole, his sister Amy, his friend Andy, the Smiths, Gregory and Gloria, old friends of the family and their daughter Lizzie.

“I’d like to introduce you Rose…” Jack started until he realized he didn’t knew her surname

“DeWitt Bukater…” she finished with a smile

“Enchanted I’m sure…are you family of Joseph Dewitt Bukater?” Arthur said looking at her from up above

“Yes…I’m his daughter actually…” Rose said

“Oh dear you looked so much with your mother…” Nicole said

“Looked?” Rose asked confused

“I’m sorry dear…it’s been so much little time since that terrible accident…” Nicole said embarrassed

Rose looked at Jack. She was confused and didn’t knew what his mother was talking about.

“You mean…my mother is dead?” Rose asked with tears in her eyes

“Yes…” Jack said

Everybody on the table felt sorry for her. Rose didn’t wanted to cry but without knowing why she started crying. She felt Jack holding her hand stronger.

“You didn’t knew your mother has passed away?” Gloria Smith asked her

“No I didn’t…I don’t see my parents for quite some time…” Rose said sitting down with the help of Jack

“Your father is here tonight…” Amy said

Rose looked at her and then looked at Jack.

“Indeed…he is one of my partners…one of the most important I should say…after me…he’s the one who possesses more part of the company…” Arthur said

“How did my mother died?” Rose asked Nicole

“She took too much pills…nobody saw it…if they did maybe she could have been saved…but they found her already dead…” Nicole started

“She was holding a bottle of pills when she was found…some say she committed suicide…” Gregory said

“Why would she do that?” Rose asked crying

“I’m sorry dear we didn’t wanted to ruin your night…” Nicole said sorry for her

“Don’t worry I’m fine now…me and my mother never had a good relationship…though she was my mother…but I’m okay now…let’s forget it…” Rose said wiping her tears

“I didn’t knew Joseph had another daughter…we only met Isabella…” Arthur said

“That’s because I don’t live with them…I like my independency…” Rose said

“Can we change the theme of this conversation? You are leaving Rose uncomfortable…” Jack said

Rose smiled at him.

“From where do you know each other?” Amy asked

“From somewhere…” Jack said

“Actually…he saved me from a dangerous situation…and I’m thankful for that…” Rose said looking to Jack

“Seems like he’s the right man to have around…in a moment of difficulty…” Gloria said

After the dinner Jack’s parents and the Smiths changed table and left Amy, Andy, Jack, Rose and Lizzie alone. The young table like they said. They were talking about several things, but Rose was feeling like she didn’t belong there. All of them rich kids talking about where they had spent they’re last vacation while all she could tell was her job at the supermarket, or at the library.

“I guess I should be going for now…” Rose said to Jack

“Now? But the party is in its best…” Jack said

“I better go…it’s getting late…” she insisted

“I’ll take you home…” Jack said

“No way! This is your party…you can’t leave it now…like you said it’s in its best…I’ll catch a taxi…” Rose said

“I can’t let you go alone at this time…and with a freak on a taxi…” Jack said

Rose laughed.

“A freak?” she asked laughing

“Yes…it’s dangerous these days to let women walk around at night…” he said

“I can take care of myself…” she said

She raised up and started walking to the door with Jack following her.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to take you?” he insisted one more time

She looked at him once again.

“Good night Jack…” she said

“As you wish…” he said not wanting to force her

She turned around and started walking. He stayed there watching her leave. When he was coming back inside the hotel she turned around.

“Hey Jack…” she yelled

He turned around surprised.

“Do you want to go to a real party?” she asked smiling
