The race is on in Hollywood to play Ol’ Blue Eyes.

Oscar winner Martin Scorsese will be directing and producing a biopic about legendary singer Frank Sinatra, who died in 1998 at age 82. The hot-tempered Sinatra led a famously colorful life: He wed four times (including to movie stars Ava Gardner and Mia Farrow), had early ties to organized crime, and starred in 50-plus movies, including the original Rat Pack extravaganza, Ocean’s Eleven, as well as From Here to Eternity, for which he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

The role of Sinatra has yet to be cast, but the early favorite is Leonardo DiCaprio, who has made three films with Scorsese, including Shutter Island, which opens this fall. Another possible contender: Johnny Depp. Respected film industry blogger Nikki Finke reports he’s the choice of the sponsoring studio, Universal. Neither actor is known for his warbling abilities, but that doesn’t matter because the film, which has the cooperation of the Sinatra estate, will use the crooner’s original recordings.

Other possible contenders? Justin Timberlake, who actually can sing and has the right hungry look. Tween heartthrob Joe Jonas has the pipes and the right look. Or maybe even Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, if he loses the fangs and nails a New Jersey accent.

Now don’t breathe a word of this. Because nobody’s supposed to know. But word from the Left Coast is that the man behind the controversial John Martorano movie is none other than gangster-filmmaker extraordinaire Martin Scorsese!

We hear that Scorsese met secretly with the Winter Hill Gang hitman at an Italian restaurant in the Back Bay while “The Departed” director was in town making “Shutter Island.”

Movie stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have helped pay towards the nursing home fees of the last Titanic survivor, the fund’s chairman said.

The actors, along with director James Cameron, are thought to have donated $30,000 (£22,000) after being asked to help 97-year-old Millvina Dean.

Miss Dean from the New Forest was nine weeks old when the liner sank in 1912.

She is struggling with monthly bills of £3,000 and is in danger of losing her room at her Southampton nursing home.

Lend support

She has been forced to auction personal belongings and memorabilia associated with the disaster to cover her care costs.

The Millvina Fund has now been set up to support her and Irish author Don Mullan, a friend of Miss Dean, approached the stars to lend their support.

Mr Mullan said: “I laid down the challenge to the Titanic actors and directors to support the Millvina Fund and I was delighted with the generosity they have shown in meeting that challenge.”

Miss Dean was the Titanic’s youngest passenger. Her father, Bertram Dean, died in the 1912 tragedy after saving the lives of his wife and two children.

Miss Dean’s mother returned from New York with her children to Southampton, where Miss Dean has spent most of her life.

The Millvina Fund was launched in Belfast on Monday, where the Titanic was built.

Leonardo DiCaprio wants Cameron Diaz to be involved in the Green documentary project he’s working on.

The Titanic actor — who is currently dating Israeli model Bar Refaeli — and Diaz sent the rumor mill into overdrive last month after they were spotted in an intimate huddle having drinks in LA.

But the the pair had only hooked up to discuss their mutual interest in all things Green.

“Leo and Cameron are passionate about the environment,” says a source close to DiCaprio. “They have so much in common, and Cameron is keen to involve Leo in a Green documentary project that she is working on.”

The “extraordinary” support Kuwait has provided for the US in the last seven years while it conducted operations in Iraq is “greatly appreciated,” said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton late Wednesday.
Clinton was addressing a Gala Dinner held at the Kuwaiti Embassy under the theme “Act for Earth,” hosted by the Kuwait-American Foundation (KAF) in partnership with Conservation International (CI) to benefit the fight against climate change.
In support of this worthy cause, KAF has raised over USD 1.8 million, which will be donated to CI in support for their efforts to harness nature as a solution to climate change.
During the Gala, Clinton was granted the 2009 Humanitarian Award by KAF for her “exceptional service over many years in the cause of conservation.” “It is a great honor to receive this award,” Clinton said, thanking Kuwait’s Ambassador to Washington Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and his wife for their hospitality.
“Kuwait has been a stalwart ally and we have been a strong supporter of Kuwait. For all of us who know the ongoing commitment that Kuwait has shown under difficult circumstances, we should express our gratitude to the Ambassador and ask him to pass it on to his government,” she said.
Furthermore, Clinton stressed, “We need to take the issue of climate change seriously,” adding that the US “must be a leader,” particularly in the run off to the Copenhagen summit on climate change next December.
On his part, Sheikh Salem told KUNA that the embassy “is keen on exerting various humanitarian and charity efforts, and is also keen on varying these efforts, where the proceedings this year will be donated to CI.” He added that the participation of several political, media and art figures in this Gala reflects “the credibility and major importance” which the efforts of the Kuwaiti Embassy enjoys here among various American circles.
In a speech addressing the Gala, the ambassador shed light on the strength of Kuwaiti-American relations and their continuous development, saying, “The relationship of our two countries has been tested over time, and has only grown stronger.” He noted that “there was a day when the ties between Kuwait and the US were defined largely in commercial terms. But time and events have drawn our nations into a far closer partnership and alliance.” The ambassador recalled the major international efforts the US exerted and the “sacrifices” it made for the liberation of Kuwait from the 1990 Iraqi invasion.
As for granting Clinton the 2009 Humanitarian Award, Sheikh Salem said that “America’s Secretary of Sate has set an example of steadfast conviction and unrelenting work on behalf of the environment.” He added that Clinton “has the respect of millions worldwide” and is a “relentless advocate” for many causes.
“When we are looking for someone to honor as a principled advocate for every nation’s interest in confronting climate change, again the choice was clear,” the ambassador stressed.
Meanwhile, the ambassador’s spouse Sheikha Rima Al-Sabah told KUNA that the Kuwaiti Embassy, in cooperation with the KAF, exerted major efforts during the past five years to organize charity events to collect money for humanitarian and charity causes.
In her speech, in which she presented the Environmental Award to actor Leonardo DiCaprio, Sheikha Rima said that DiCaprio is considered “an exceptional American actor who has also become a compelling voice for a safe environment and a healthy environment.” She said he used his fame “to serve a cause that knows no borders; the defense of the earth itself.” Furthermore, Sheikha Rima stressed that “governments are working to meet an economic crisis, yet the icecaps continue to melt and the sea levels continue to rise. That, too, is a crisis, demanding the same degree of urgency, care and focus.” DeCaprio received the Environmental Award for being “a great champion of environmental causes, from climate change to the protection of endangered species.” Accepting his award, DiCaprio said, “We are in the environmental age” and “we need smart policies.” “There will be no significant progress without actions from our governments, ” he stressed.
The Gala Dinner was attended by several top senior American officials, including Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood; National Security Advisor James L. Jones; House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman; Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator John Kerry; in addition to diplomats and prominent figures.
CI is working with partners around the world to protect the tropical forests, seascapes and other crucial biological diversity essential to the survival of our planet.
“Act for Earth” is the fifth Gala Dinner hosted by the KAF. Last year, it raised over USD 1.6 million to benefit the fight against malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, which was attended by former US President George W. Bush as Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker.
KAF was founded in 1991 with a core mission to boost ties between the people of the US and Kuwait, focusing its resources on educational and cultural exchange programs for youth and disadvantaged persons.
Through its gala dinners, which were launched in 2005, KAF has expanded its efforts globally by partnering with different organizations annually to support causes ranging from assisting refugees to improving education, providing quality healthcare, fighting poverty and protecting the environment.
Founded in 1987, Conservation International is a non-profit organization with a mission to support human well being by conserving the Earth’s living natural heritage; global biodiversity.

PARTY ANIMALS IN DC: Ever since Obama adviser David Axelrod started hosting pizza party strategy sessions, scoping out quality pies has become the new hobby among discerning Democrats. “Tom, I found a new pizza place for you,” said composer Marvin Hamlisch to Tom Brokaw at the Kuwait America Foundation Humanitarian Awards on Wednesday night. “Your favorite is Tiramisu, right? Well, you’ve got to try La Houppa, around the corner from Barneys. They don’t deliver. But it’s great.’’

The cuisine at the Kuwaiti embassy that night was decidedly more high brow, and the evening raised $1.8 million for conservation projects in Brazil and Indonesia. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Leonardo DiCaprio were honored for their environmental awareness efforts.

Brokaw remembered covering the first Earth Day in 1970. “It was funky,” he said. “It’s a macro problem now. You have to do more than go out and hug a tree.’’

Hostess Rima Al-Sabah won raves not only for the gala but also for putting together an afternoon seminar on climate change moderated by Bob Woodward and Sen. John Kerry at the home of Brazilian Ambassador Antonio de Aguiar Patriota. That night, she was sure to dress the part in a chiffon tiger print Dior caftan. “Whoopi Goldberg wore this dress to the Academy Awards,’’ she said. “When I saw it on television, I knew it was the perfect dress to celebrate the importance of preserving endangered species.’’

Lindsay Lohan reportedly spent last Wednesday night flirting with Leonardo DiCaprio.

According to The Sun, the Mean Girls actress was spotted spending time with the Revolutionary Road star at the My House nightclub in Hollywood.

A source told the newspaper: “As soon as Lindsay saw Leo she was like a bee to honey.

“She was going for the big catch and when she spotted him in a dark corner of the club she headed straight for him.”

They added: “She quickly monopolised his conversation and made sure she had him all to herself.

“It was a bit shocking when she got up and started dancing in front of him but he seemed to be enjoying it.”

Lohan recently recorded a spoof dating video after her break-up with partner Samantha Ronson.

(tsch) Leonardo DiCaprio ist in diesen Tagen ein fröhlicher Mann. Den Präsidentschaftswahlen in den USA sei Dank. Nun sitzt er lächelnd im Nobelhotel Hassler in Rom. Der politisch engagierteste Schauspieler nach George Clooney und Sean Penn stellt einen Politthriller über die vertrackte Situation im Nahostgebiet vor: “Der Mann, der niemals lebte” (Start: 20.11.) ist ein kritischer Film über ein Amerika, das rücksichtslos seine Ziele durchsetzt, über Leichen geht und Vertrauen reihenweise bricht – ein Amerika, das laut DiCaprio nun der Vergangenheit angehört. Im Film spielt der 34-Jährige einen Agenten, der erkennt, dass das Land, dem er im Irak, in Jordanien, Syrien und anderen arabischen Staaten dient, Unrecht tut im Kampf gegen den Terror. So fühlt er sich immer stärker hineingezogen in einen Strudel aus Lügen. Im Interview spricht DiCaprio hoffnungsfroh von einem neuen Zeitalter des Wandels zum Besseren – und das weltweit.

newsflex.de: Mr. DiCaprio, Sie haben miterlebt, wie Barack Obama zum neuen Präsidenten der USA gewählt wurde.

DiCaprio: Es ist wirklich ein schöner Tag für unser Land, ein historischer Moment. Ich war bereits in Rom, als sich das Wahldebakel zwischen George Bush und Al Gore vor unserer aller Augen abspielte. Damals drehte ich dort gerade Szenen für “Gangs of New York”, und ich weiß noch, wie ich die ganze Nacht aufblieb, aber wir einfach keinen neuen Präsidenten bekamen, weil sich das Auszählen der Stimmen und der einhergehende Rechtsstreit noch über Wochen hinzogen. Aber diesmal waren wir uns sicher, sehr sicher.

newsflex.de: Noch hat George Bush einige Wochen im Amt, bis er abgelöst wird. Was erwarten Sie von ihm?

DiCaprio: Man könnte auch fragen: Welchen Schaden könnte er noch anrichten? (lacht) Alles, was ich sagen kann, ist, dass ich hoffe, dass Obama sein Amt antritt und den politischen Kurs von Bush nicht übernimmt, sondern sich davon distanziert, indem er eine 180-Grad-Kehrtwende macht. Aber es hängt auch von der Bevölkerung ab, ihn dabei zu unterstützen.

DiCaprio: Sie muss ihm den Rücken stärken. Das Land muss mit seiner Regierung im Reinen sein, was in den vergangenen Jahren nicht der Fall war.

newsflex.de: Die Verantwortung der Amerikaner ist also mit der Wahl noch nicht erledigt?

DiCaprio: Keine Frage: Ich bin stolz auf mein Land, das diesen Wechsel ermöglich hat. Die Vorgängerregierung hat uns in eine vollkommen falsche Richtung gestoßen. Barack Obama hat mit der Unterstützung des Senats, des Repräsentantenhauses und der Bevölkerung die Macht, jetzt und sofort einen wegweisenden, lang anhaltenden Wandel anzustoßen. Und der geht uns alle weltweit an, weil er alle möglichen Bereiche betrifft: von der Umweltpolitik über die Wirtschaft bis hin zu den militärischen Engagements der USA.

newsflex.de: Sie haben sich mehrfach kritisch über das US-Wahlsystem geäußert. Ist es unter dem Eindruck des Obama-Siegs müßig, sich um eine Reformierung zu kümmern?

DiCaprio: Natürlich ist das immer noch ein wichtiges Thema: Ich halte es für problematisch, dass es eine Frist gibt, innerhalb derer man sich als Wähler registrieren lassen muss. Das ist eine merkwürdige Regelung in den USA, die geändert werden sollte. Ich trete dafür ein, dass die Menschen einen freien Arbeitstag bekommen, um wählen zu gehen. Auch sollte das Wählen zur Pflicht werden. Das Gremienwahlsystem über Wahlmänner ist auch völlig derangiert. Von all diesen Problemen einmal abgesehen, denke ich aber, dass wir im derzeitigen Internet-Zeitalter großartige Möglichkeiten haben, die Politik an die Jugendkultur heranzuführen, also junge Leute für Politik zu interessieren.

newsflex.de: Sie selbst haben versucht, mit einem Internet-Video für die Wahl an sich zu werben. Wie lautet Ihre Bilanz?

DiCaprio: Es war ein voller Erfolg. Wenn ich mich an den Präsidentschaftswahlkampf von vor vier Jahren erinnere, als George Bush von John Kerry herausgefordert wurde, gab es das Internet zwar schon, und es wurde auch schon viel damit gemacht. Es war aber bei weitem nicht so stark mit der Jugendkultur verwoben wie heute. Damals reiste ich von einem Bundesstaat zum nächsten, um gemeinsam mit Kerry über Umweltthemen zu sprechen. Im Vergleich zu dem kurzen Video, das wir diesmal ins Netz stellten und am nächsten Tag schon von Millionen von Nutzern gesehen wurde, war der Effekt damals lächerlich. Wir haben gezeigt, dass Videos, die massenhaft über das Internet verbreitet werden, Hunderttausende junger Leute dazu bewegen können, sich für eine Wahl online zu registrieren. Das ist eine völlig neue Generation von Menschen, die offen und frei ihre Meinung äußern, sich in einen Diskurs über Politik und Gesellschaft einbringen. Und Obama hat diese Jugendbewegung für sich gewonnen.

newsflex.de: Woran liegt es aber, dass Ihr neuer hochpolitischer Film von eben diesem Publikum in den USA größtenteils links liegen gelassen wurde?

DiCaprio: Es stimmt, der Film war nicht gerade erfolgreich an den US-Kinokassen. Die Leute werden von der Kriegsthematik förmlich überschwemmt und wollen es daher am liebsten nicht wahrhaben. Ich habe mich gerade deshalb für den Film entschieden, weil er ein kontroverses Thema behandelt. Natürlich reizte es mich auch, mit Ridley Scott und Russell Crowe zusammenzuarbeiten. Doch ist es selten geworden, dass sich ein großes Filmstudio an einen solchen Filmstoff herantraut und viel Geld investiert. Ich hoffe, dass auch weiterhin der Wille dazu vorhanden ist.

newsflex.de: Sie spielen Roger Ferris, den US-Agenten in Nahost, eindringlich und zugewachsen: War der unkonventionelle Bart Ihre Idee?

DiCaprio: Das war eine schlichte Notwendigkeit. Als ich Hintergrundgespräche mit Agenten führte, die in arabischen Ländern gearbeitet haben, wurde mir klar, dass man ohnehin wie ein bunter Hund wirkt, wenn man vor Ort durch die Straßen geht. Man fällt zwangsläufig auf, was die Gefahr erhöht, zum Ziel von Angriffen zu werden. Also versucht man alles, um das Risiko zu mindern: Man lässt sich eine Bart wachsen, verdunkelt das Haar mit Schuhcreme, das ganze Programm.

newsflex.de: Wie haben Sie sich sonst vorbereitet: Besuchten Sie Filmorte wie Amman oder lebten Sie in einem palästinensischen Flüchtlingslager?

DiCaprio: Um ehrlich zu sein, habe ich noch kein einziges Mal einen Fuß in den Nahen Osten gesetzt. Die Gelegenheit hat sich einfach noch nicht ergeben, obwohl mich die Leute und die Geschichte sehr interessieren. Wir drehten den Film in Marokko, wo ich mich auch die längste Zeit aufgehalten habe. Das ist ein wahres Boom-Land, was Filmproduktionen angeht, weil Hollywood regelmäßig anklopft, wenn es mal wieder eine Geschichte über die arabische Welt erzählen möchte. Ridley Scott hat schon vier seiner Filme dort gedreht.

newsflex.de: Welche Ähnlichkeiten Ihrer Rolle zu sich selbst haben Sie entdeckt?

DiCaprio: Ich denke, dass meine politischen Auffassungen ähnlich derer meiner Filmfigur sind. Ich glaube auch, dass wir uns in unserem Patriotismus ähneln, ohne alles blind zu akzeptieren, was unser Land tut. Ich würde also sagen, dass mein Glaubenssystem dem meiner Rolle entspricht. Doch am Ende bin ich ein Schauspieler und würde es mir nie anmaßen, mich auf eine Ebene mit diesen Menschen zu stellen, die aufrecht und couragiert für ihren Job ihr Leben riskieren. Es ist schwer genug, sich in eine Person hineinzufühlen, die ums Überleben kämpfen muss, während ich das privilegierte Leben eines Schauspielers genieße.

newsflex.de: Ihre große Liebe im Film, Ihre iranische Kollegin Golshifteh Farahani, hat nicht viel Gutes durch den Schauspieljob erfahren und wurde aufgrund der Mitwirkung am Film von ihrem Heimatland verstoßen.

DiCaprio: Wir sind gute Freunde, auch weil wir ähnliche politische Ansichten teilen. Sie musste viel erleiden, weil sie die Rolle angenommen hatte. Ich kann natürlich nicht für sie sprechen, aber die Kritik im Film richtet sich zuallererst an die Außenpolitik der USA. Der Film behandelt schließlich die Fehler der Bush-Administration, speziell bei der Besatzungspolitik. Ich denke, wir haben auf faire Weise all die Defizite der US-Politik dargestellt. Wir hüteten uns davor, in das Gut/Böse-Schema zu verfallen, sondern bemühten uns, das komplette Spektrum aller Beteiligten, ihrer Hintergründe und Ziele abzubilden. Es ist ein raues Portrait eines verwirrenden und chaotischen Krieges, ein Symbol, würde ich sagen. Golshifteh hat viel Courage bewiesen, ihre Entscheidung aufrechtzuerhalten. Ich sehe in ihr ein riesiges Talent und glaube, dass sie eine erfolgreiche Zukunft erwartet.

newsflex.de: Sie selbst haben hart gekämpft, um das Klischee des ewigen Jungens abzulegen. Fühlen Sie sich von Ihrem jungenhaften Charme manchmal noch verfolgt?

DiCaprio: Das Image wird wohl immer irgendwie an mir haften bleiben, weil ich in dem erfolgreichsten Film aller Zeiten die Hauptrolle gespielt habe. “Titanic” und mein Name haben sich eng miteinander verbunden.

teleschau. Wie stehen Sie heute dazu?

DiCaprio: Ich werde “Titanic” nie vergessen, ich bin stolz darauf. Der Film wird also immer ein Teil von mir bleiben. Darüber war ich mir aber im Klaren. Wenn man in der Filmindustrie eine lange Karriere haben möchte und verschiedene Rollen und Genres erkunden möchte, dann muss man die Prinzipien des Geschäfts akzeptieren, die Konsequenzen tragen. Man darf sich aber nicht davon abbringen lassen, nach den ganz eigenen Interessen weiterzumachen.

newsflex.de: Was gab den Ausschlag für Ihr nächstes Projekt, die Romanverfilmung “Zeiten des Aufruhrs” (Start: 15.01.)?

DiCaprio: Ich spiele einen Mann, der sich an ein Leben in der idealisierten Americana-Atmosphäre der 50er-Jahre anpassen muss und mit seiner Ehe unzufrieden ist. Er versucht also, das klischeehafte Leben, das er führen muss, abzulegen. Aber es klappt irgendwie nicht. Er versucht dennoch glücklich zu werden, sich mit allem zu arrangieren, doch die Situation gleitet ihm aus den Händen. Mich hat die sehr menschliche Geschichte fasziniert.

newsflex.de: Nach “Titanic” standen Sie hier zum ersten Mal wieder zusammen mit Kate Winslet vor der Kamera …

DiCaprio: Wir sind die ganze Zeit über Freunde geblieben. Sie ist die beste Schauspielerin ihrer Generation, das glaube ich aus tiefstem Herzen. Sie ist die beste Wahl für den Film, und vielleicht vergessen wir alle für einen kurzen Moment, dass wir schon gemeinsam in “Titanic” waren. Natürlich unterhielten wir uns oft über die damalige Zeit.

newsflex.de: Sie sind mit 34 Jahren bereits ein alter Hase im Geschäft, der auf über 20 Jahre Filmerfahrung zurückblickt. Welche Erinnerungen daran sind für Sie besonders wertvoll?

DiCaprio: Wenn ich mich zum Beispiel an “Gilbert Grape – Irgendwo in Iowa” und “Die Geschichte einer Jugend” erinnere, zwei meiner ganz frühen Filme, als ich unter anderem mit Johnny Depp, Juliette Louis und Lasse Halström drehte, dann entstehen schon nostalgische Gefühle. Das war eine wichtige, wenn nicht entscheidende Phase des Übergangs in meinem Leben. Diese Filme haben einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen.

Leonardo DiCaprio could have been forgiven for being a little tired at the London premiere of his latest thriller Body Of Lies.

The Hollywood heart-throb followed all-night celebrations of Barack Obama’s election victory with a transatlantic flight to the film’s Rome premiere, before arriving in the British capital.

He said the historic result had left him with a “current of excitement running through my body”. “I couldn’t be more proud of my country right now, proud to be an American.”

Screaming fans lined the red carpet at Leicester Square, where he was joined by director Ridley Scott and guest Olivier Martinez. Leo’s movie, which also features Australian star Russell Crowe, centres on a US agent hunting for a terrorist mastermind.

1. Le film est prêt. Produit par Mike Medavoy pour la Paramount, ce thriller qui se déroule dans un hôpital psychiatrique situé sur une île coupée de tout devrait faire frémir les festivaliers.
2. Car ceux qui ont lu le roman de Dennis Lehane savent à quel point le suspens est terrifiant, une matière en or pour le maître de la paranoïa qu’est Scorsese.
3. Le producteur n’a que des bons souvenirs à Cannes. Son ZODIAC, le chef d’oeuvre de David Fincher, avait conquis le Festival là ou les Etats-Unis l’avaient rejeté. Zodiac avait vu sa carrière commerciale internationale relancée par le Festival.
4. Scorsese a eu la Palme d’Or en 1976 avec TAXI DRIVER et le prix de la mise en scène en 1985 avec AFTER HOURS.
5. Avec Di Caprio, émeute garanti autour des marches du Palais. Gilles Jacob a souhaité un grand artiste pour l’édition 2009. Scorsese rejoindrait Pedro Almodovar pour la course à la Palme.
